Growing grape vines need not be a commercial activity for all. They can be grown in addition to other plants and can be very rewarding too. All plants are not similar and some may need more space to grow as compared to other varieties. Depending on the vigor of growth you can plant the vines at eight, six or four feet apart.
Depending on the growth habitat, the grape vines certainly need to be pruned and trained. In case you are planting vines that are traditionally found in the forests of America, then there are higher tendency of drooping. They should be allowed to grow in their natural pattern and you should not try to contain the grape vines growth pattern as it may impact growth. Usually these varieties are smaller in size and so the vines should be allowed to grow on a wired fence six feet above the ground.
Unlike wild American varieties, most of the grape vine varieties found in America have a European ancestry and as such they have a tendency of growing straight. In such cases an extensive trellis system is required. At the very least you will require four wires to contain them- the first at least three feet above the ground and more wires at an interval of six to eight inches above the wire at the bottom. Even if small it will give you a nice looking home vineyard.
During summers and springs grape vines need to have a good supply of water as these are the periods when they grow actively. In case the area in which you live does not have much of a rainfall then you should water them once every week at the minimum. The ripening process is slowed if you water the plant, so if you see the fruit changing color don’t water them.
Don’t forget when growing grape vines to prune your vines at regular intervals. If they are not pruned they will overgrow and become tangled. You may have numerous grape bunches but few will properly ripen. Ultimately the vines may die and all your efforts will do down the drain.
